Pipe Helicals

The helical lead section is a shaft (circular steel pipe) with one or more steel helical plates welded to the pipe. Steel plates (shaped as helices) with a controlled pitch allows the pier to be installed with virtually no soil disruption.

The lead and extension shaft is used to transmit torque during installation that transfers axial loads to the helical plate(s). Upon loading, the modulus of the shaft also provides a major component of the lateral loading.

FASTEEL® helicals can be manufactured from almost any pipe size under the strict guidelines of ISO 9001:2000. Typical pipe sizes range from 2˝ to 10˝ O.D. pipe. Pipes in excess of 30” have been used. Helical plate sizes vary according to the size of pipe, ranging from 6˝ to 42˝ in diameter. The length of the pier section is generally limited to the available reach of the installation equipment and/or various type of existing structures.

After installation, the pier has bearing capacity both in compression and/or tension in the subsurface by transferring the structure’s load to the helical plates in the soil bearing strata.
